KDE4 Devel Live-CD Review: Work in Progress

[ Wednesday, 25 April 2007, riklaunim ]
A few days ago first KDE4 CD images presenting the current development version of KDE4 have been published in the Internet. Nobody should expect that this version is close to the final product. As the SVN code being intensively and continuously developed, no wonder it’s neither stable, usable nor it contains all the features planned for the final release due in late 2007. This review should be then treated as a pure experiment, “a glance” at the current status of KDE4 development.

I’m happy to announce that significant efforts have just started in order to translate the key parts of the PolishLinux.org vortal into Italian! CentOS 5 as a Desktop System

[ Monday, 23 April 2007, riklaunim ]
CentOS is an enterprise class GNU/Linux distribution basing on the publicly available source packages of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Just like RHEL or Debian stable, CentOS focuses on stability and security, sacrificing the “latest and greatest” packages. Is CentOS 5 really that stable? And does it fit on the average Joe’s desktop? This is what I’m gonna find out.

[ Friday, 20 April 2007, michuk ]
The HOWTO describes the differences between the Linux and Windows filesystems (where are my Program Files??) and explains the reasons for mounting/umounting disks and devices. How to mount a Windows partition? How to mount a pendrive (USB stick)? If you need answers for these questions, feel free to proceed :)

Pardus 2007.1 — Almost Perfect

[ Monday, 16 April 2007, riklaunim ]
I’ve already had the pleasure of testing Pardus once and it made a good impression on me. Recently the new edition, Pardus 2007.1, came out and I’ve decided to try both the LiveCD and the installation versions. This edition is almost fabulous, but “almost” makes a big difference which we are going to elaborate on a bit later.

A Brief Look at SugarUI by RedHat

[ Tuesday, 10 April 2007, riklaunim ]
Two months ago we covered the latest hardware features introduced in the OLPC laptops. Today we focus on the usability of the SugarUI. Red Hat has recently released first public images of the system that is supposed to be installed on the OLPC laptops. I felt an irresistible temptation… I downloaded 291 MB ISO, burned it on a CD and started testing. Here is what I got.

IceWM — a desktop for Windows emigrants

[ Thursday, 5 April 2007, adz ]
In my debut article on PolishLinux.org I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite window managers — IceWM. This unusually lightweight window manager has been created in C++ by Marko Maček. IceWM is perfect for Windows’s “emigrants” especially for users with older computers. IceWM will be suitable for advanced users who are looking for a lightweight and simple window manager.
