MHT support in Firefox

[ Monday, 8 September 2008, GrzegorzJZD ]

MIME HTML or MHT is a standard way to combine the external resources, like images or sound files, that in normal browsing situation are linked externally (downloaded), into the same file as the HTML code, using MIME.

The MHT files come handy to save complete web pages as a single file (unlike the usual “Save page as…” process).

The MHT format is supported by Internet Explorer, Opera and most Microsoft Office applications. Beside saving the whole page to a PDF file, this is one of the handiest methods for WWW archiving.

Firefox doesn’t support MHTML files directly since 1.5.0.4 version, however under Windows this functionality can be added by installing a free Mozilla Archive Format add-on.

The UnMHT add-on is another solution, facilitating MHTML browsing on all supported systems (Linux, MacOS X, Windows).

The Un-MHT add-on can also save all pages open in tabs into MHT files. The pages will get saved separately (using page title as the file name).

To install this add-on, you need to log in to Mozilla Add-ons. Users without an account can download it using a direct link unmht-4.7.0-fx.xpi (2008-07-23)

Personally, I prefer to save the pages to PDF files, using a script-bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar Save As PDF

Pretty nifty, but thankfully we’ll be able to get away completely from MHT in the near future now that IE8 FINALLY supports data urls.
