Gnome Office

Gnome Office is a somewhat artificial name for a group of Gnome (GTK+) applications for document management. Gnome Office is not as well-integrated as KOffice, because the developement of each application is done in a different team and managed separately without much coordination. The key apps considered to be a part of Gnome Office are:

Pic 1. Gnumeric - simple cash
management sheet
- Abiword - a document editor (a counterpart of Microsoft Word),
- Gnumeric - a very good spreadsheet editor (comparable with Microsoft Excel),
- Dia - a flowcharting program (may be compared with MS Visio),
- Gimp - a great open source pixel graphics software
- Inskape - a vector graphics application for Gnome
- Sodipodi - an alternative vector graphics application for Gnome
- Gnucash - an advanced financial accounting tool
- Planner - a project management program (a simple counterpart of MS Project)
There is no presentation program or a database creator. The main two apps are Abiword and Gnumeric (developed by the same team). Other apps, like Dia or Gimp are just put in the office suite by the Gnome people, but they are not enough integrated with others to call them a part of the suite.
Altough not as MS Office compatible as OpenOffice.org apps, it’s advicable to try Abiword and Gnumeric as the lighter OpenOffice.org counterparts, especially if you are using Gnome or XFCE as your major desktop. All of the applications are also available for MS Windows platofrm (contrary to KOffice apps) so it may be also a good option for people working with two operating systems interchangably.
