PC-BSD

PC-BSD is a fairly new project aiming at making FreeBSD user-friendly by providing a nice default desktop, easy way to install software and graphical configuration tools.

This system can be a real Linux killer. Easy to setup, nice looking and easy to maintain. The brave move of PC-BSD developers is the decision to provide Windows-like installation packages with all the dependencies bundled into the package. This makes the size of the packages bigger, but saves lots of time for the new users in finding and installing all the dependent packages.

“It’s not because of fate, it’s because of Tequila” That may be the best thing I have ever read in my whole life!

As of version 1.4Beta:
They need to provide a GUI Ports Manager as part of the default setup. Without it, new users are limited to a small set of PBI packages. This is a must though the current pbis are fairly good.

If it wasn’t for the lack of a gui ports installer, this distribution beats all others hands down for ease of use. Even without a default and supported ports manager, pcbsd is tough to beat. Highly recommended for anyone looking toward non-microsoft operating systems eben if you are a complete beginner.
