KateOS LIVE 3.2 beta — a lightweight dektop

KateOS is a Polish distribution which is completely community-driven. The effects of the community work are pretty impressive. Kate is original and has its own feeling. Each new release of the system brings a few decent innovations and offers an even better GNU/Linux lightweight multimedia desktop. On February 12th a new beta version KateOS Live 3.2 was released. I decided to give it a try and share my experience with this nice and modern Linux distribution.

Xgl/Compiz in Mandriva 2007 Free

Xgl is a hardware accelerated X-server created by Novell. Thanks to the abilities of modern graphics cards, it uses 3d-rendering, which opens up w whole new bunch of possibilities for modern computer desktops. I will be demonstrating Xgl with Compiz window manager basing on my Mandriva 2007 Free (32–bit version) Linux distribution.

Dreamlinux 2.2 MME — When Dreams Come True

Dreamlinux is an operating system that boots from a Live-CD with the option to install on a hard drive as well. Dreamlinux is not just another Live-CD based on Debian, it’s not another distro coming with XFCE 4.4. Dreamlinux 2.2 MME is a polished multimedia system from which Xubuntu developers could really learn a lot and which has the potential to demolish Windows Multimedia Center as far as the functionality is concerned. This review concerns Dreamlinux 2.2 Multimedia Edition.

Pardus — a penguin from Turkey

Pardus is a Turkish distribution that comes with KDE as the default desktop. It is however not just another pack of known open source apps. Pardus comes with its own, original GUI system installer, a package management system — PISI and system settings applet — TASMA, as well as a few additional goods.

Lintrack: Linux for Internet Service Providers

Lintrack is a new GNU/Linux distribution for routers, firewalls, network access servers and more. It features new approaches to several areas such as system configuration and integration. I would like to introduce you to the project and provide step-by-step instructions for configuring Lintrack as a simple OSPF backbone router and a PPPoE network access server.

Review: Frugalware 0.5 (Siwenna)

Frugalware is an independent GNU/Linux distribution similar to Slackware, aiming at simplicity, speed and multimedia support. It features a wide software repository, managed by Pacman from Archlinux, which resolves dependencies and makes system updates easy. I’m going to walk you through the process of installing and configuring the latest version (0.5) of this outstanding OS.
