Choose OS

This is the central place for all of you hesitating which Linux distro or BSD flavor to pick. Fill out the distro chooser first, and then interactively compare the major GNU/Linux and BSD flavours to see what seems the best fit for you!

If you have a laptop or older hardware you should take a look at those articles as well:

The pain of choice
Pic 1. Lots of distros… which is the best for me?

Finally, if you just want to try Linux with minimal learning-curve, try one of the Live-CD distros, without damaging your Windows installation, straight from the CD!

Whatever you choose, stay with GNU/Linux! It’s really worth using, so give it a try!

You should write something about Solaris too. Something like Nexenta, wich it looks like a very interesting OS and a great idea.
Tell us, pros and cons of it and various comparisons. It could be a good idea and at least for me OpenSolaris looks very interesting. So why not talk abit about it ?

I am new to Linux and at the moment my favorite combination is Edgy 6.1 with KDE 3.5. Could you please let me know when e17 is in the same stage of completion as KDE. I have seen a couple of pictures and comments on http://www.modfree.org and it would be nice to give it a try.

Any advice would be very welcome. Many thanks!

You seem to have an extensive set of Linux reviews, yet there is one glaring ommission… PCLinuxOS. The latest version (english only) being 2007 test release 3, soon to be test release 4 (possibly later today), quickly followed by 2007 final. The test release 3 is an amazingly stable, user friendly distro. I’d give it 6 ****** on a scale of 1* to 5* Certainly worth checking out, it’s currently rated number 4 on distrowatch.

You guys should try Mandriva - brilliant up-to-date OS for 2010. Better than PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu.
