This is a simple distro chooser. Fill out the survey to get some idea which operating systems (Linux distros or BSD flavors) may fit your needs. Try to answer the questions reasonably - choose the most important features you need. There is no perfect OS that has it all.

1. Are you building a desktop system or a server?
server only
home server
desktop, but I'm a programmer/developer
for desktop (I'm not a programmer)
this does not concern me

2. What is your current knowledge of UNIX systems (i.e. Linux,BSD)?
expert
advanced
intermediate
newbie
this does not concern me

3. How important stability and maturity is for you?
very much
quite much
not really
at all
this does not concern me

4. How important speed and responsiveness is for you?
very much
quite much
not really
at all
this does not concern me

5. How important is system security for you?
very much
quite much
not really
at all
this does not concern me

6. How much time do you plan to spend on learning new system?
very much - I need to understand my system and learn to cope with all the problems I may encounterl I want to become an expert on my system
much - I want to learn to configure my system and adjust it to my personal preferences; I'm not afraid of the command line
not much - I consider myself a power user but I don't really want to spend my time learning commands and editing config files to get to know every single detail of my system - the basics, yes, but that's far enough
none - I need a system that's configured and ready to play with just after installation, I'm not interested in how it's organized and how it works, just want it to work
this does not concern me

7. Do you put emphasis on fast and troubleless software (package) installation?
it's a crucial thing for me - I often test different software and don't have the time to play with compiling from sources, looking for dependencies and so on
quite much - easy installation is a big plus; still I can compile and build a package once in a while
not much - nice package management system temps, but I usually prefer to prepare packages myself so I know what exact functionality I get
none - I want to choose the compilation flags and options myself and don't care for the binary packages at all
this does not concern me

8. Do you care for graphical configuration tools (like 'Control Panel' known from the leading operating system)?
very much - a central place allowing me to easily configure my system is a must
much - it would be great to have an easy way to configure the basic operations
not much - I won't complain if there are some wizards, but it's not a big deal, I usually configure my system using the command line anyway
at all - I configure my system from a command line and don't care for any wizards cuz I won't use them anyway, I know /etc like my own pocket
this does not concern me

9. How important system localization and internationalization is for you?
very important - full internationalization (system and installer) is a must
quite important - the system and installer should be available in my language
useful - just a possibility to somehow localize my system with not too much effort is enough for me
this does not concern me

10. How important is for you system popularity and good community behind the OS?
very much
quite much
not really
at all
this does not concern me
