I like KateOS for Xfce and a well chosen list of apps. But I love PCLinuxOS spin - SAM Linux, it performs better. So, go for SAM, if you choose a distro for Xfce.

"I was also surprised when I saw that Thunderbird was a default e-mail client. Sylpheed-Claws would fit better to a lightweight distro like KateOS in my opinion"
would Dillo fit better than Firefox? in my opinion Thunderbird is light enought and it's much more comfortable in use. "light" doesn't mean "as light as possible".

Why load vi or nano? MC already contains an editor, mcedit, which is quite good.

You can invoke it by name (mcedit) or by pressing F4 within mc (it is seamlessly integrated with mc). Just set the EDIOTR environment variable to mcedit instead of vi (or nano).

Sounds like a good distro. As for Key Bindings conflicting with MC, the same thing happens in Gnome Terminal on Ubuntu.

"The only irritating little issue that I found was that the XFCE terminal key shortcuts conflict with the bindings of Midnight Commander – F10 triggers the terminal menu making it impossible to close MC."
er.. have you tried switching the F10 shortcut off in Terminal's preferences?

also i woudn't say that ext3 is more efficient than reiserfs...
