Try poldek and rewrite it again. Debian's apt-get in it's functionality is like a just born little baby. Poldek has not only functionality of apt-get, but <strong>much much much</strong> more. Don't forget, poldek is ported to and used in other distros (e.g. Fedora, CentOS, etc).
