Essential Software That Are Not Available On Linux OS
An operating system is essentially the most important component in a computer. It manages the different hardware and software components of a computer in the most effective way. There are different types of operating system and everything comes with their own set of programs and software. You cannot expect a Linux program to have all the features of a windows software and vice versa.
However, unless you are well versed and expert in windows program, this should not be a major obstacle Just like a coin has two sides, everything has its own merits and demerits.
Though you may not find the exact same software for Linux, there are programs that could be considered roughly equivalent to certain popular windows applications.
MS Office: This is one of the most popular Microsoft apps that is used by almost everyone. It is a word processing software that is user-friendly, easy to learn and understand and it is simple. It includes MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. Linux has a similar app, Kingsoft (WPS Community) that lets you do almost everything that an MS Office would allow you to do. Kingsoft is more popular in smartphones.
Microsoft Internet Explorer: Browsing is one of the core purposes of using a computer, laptop or desktop, and a browser is just inevitable. While Internet explorer, google chrome, Firefox, Netscape is popular in windows operating system; Opera is the equivalent Linux app that lets you search the net. There are numerous sites that work better in Opera. Because Linux is more protected and secured, it prevents virus attacks.
Multimedia Apps: Photo editing is another major use of computers. In a windows based computer, popular multimedia apps would be Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, and GIMP. When it comes to a Linux based system, it is replaced by ink space, GIMP, and pixel. Though the apps do pretty much the same thing, the way it operates is quite different.
Windows Media Player: Can you imagine a computer or a system without movies, songs or videos? Even the thought seems absurd. Viewing movies is enabled by windows media player in a windows based system. In a Linux based system we have multimedia apps like MPlayer, Xine and Totem. Winamp, sonic and iTunes are replaced effectively by Amarok, a Tunes, XMMS and much more.
Adobe Reader: Accessing files and reading information is an essential part of everyday life and almost everyone uses computers for the same. Adobe Acrobat PDF reader is the default Microsoft app that is used for the same, while in Linux the app used is Xpdf and Kpdf.
With so many flavors of Linux and multifarious apps in the repository, finding the right app to suit your needs can make your life a lot easier. Linux isn’t a cohesive entity like windows.
